Halloween Story written for my brother Zaki

Once upon a time, there was a boy called Tomas. Tomas was new in the neighbourhood. Every year, on Halloween, the children would go and ask for “trick or treat”, but there was one house that nobody dared to go to. Tomas was curious about the dark, dark house, but he did not know who lived there.

That house was a legend. It had a reputation of being a dark, dark haunted house. Tomas did not know the reputation of the house. So, on the night of Tomas’ first Halloween, in that town – or as it was known in the old days “All Hallows Eve”  - the night when all the lost souls ran freely in the world –  all the children got together and stood right in front of the dark, dark house. Every single child began to say:

     – We dare you, to go and ask for “trick or treat”.

But one boy, called Zaki, felt sorry for Tomas and tried to warn him that the house was haunted. Unfortunately, there was too much noise, so Tomas did not hear Zaki trying to warn him and began to walk up the dark, dark path that led to the dark, dark house, with his heart hammering in his chest and his legs turn to jelly. Tomas saw a cat run by and even it was scared!

Every step Tomas took towards the dark, dark house, filled him with more fear, but he had even more fear of failing. When Tomas got right in front of the BIG, dark, dark door, of the dark, dark house, he knocked and shouted, “Trick or Treat!!!!” Suddenly, the door opened with a creepy, creaky noise. Tomas got scared, really, really scared. All the other children were shouting, “Go in! Go in! Go in!”

Even though he was scared, Tomas was influenced by the children’s words, so he went in. Inside the dark, dark house, there was a wide dark, dark corridor. After the wide dark, dark corridor, there was a narrow dark, dark passage. Beyond the narrow dark, dark passage, there was a dark, dark room. In the dark, dark room, there was a dark, dark rocking chair. On the dark, dark rocking chair, there was an old, old man.

Tomas screamed, “Aaaaahhhhh” and then the old, old man screamed, “Arrrrgggghhhh”, then Tomas screamed again, “Aaaahhhhh” and all of a sudden, the old, old man said, “Treat?” The old, old man had a big packet full of sweets which he put into Tomas’ little bag, held in his shaking hands. Then, they smiled at each other.

When Tomas finally came out from the haunted, dark, dark house, he had a huge smile on his face. The other children thought that Tomas was cursed, and screamed, “Aaaaahhhhhh!!!!!” Tomas had to calm them down and explain, but then, all the children ran into the dark, dark house. They ran along the wide, dark, dark corridor. Then they squeezed into the narrow dark, dark passage. Then they passed into the dark, dark room and in the dark, dark room, they saw the dark, dark rocking chair and in the dark, dark rocking chair, they saw the old, old man waving his big bag of sweets!

Happy Halloween!!!!

    Nadja,
What an excellent story. I loved the use of dark all the time. I’m sure those children were very scared for Tomas until he came out, safe and sound.

    Thanks Miss W,

My mother told me that the best way, to help my brother practice reading, was too use the same word or sentence again and again.
I chose ” dark dark” because he likes the story called “The dark dark tale.” I wrote it 5 times before the final story that you can see.
The version I gave my brother, also has lots of pictures, which he could colour in after he read the story. He was so happy to see his name in the story!!!
