Portuguese Football

      I live in Portugal and I absolutely loooooooove football. I don’t know why I am so passionate about football, I think it’s because I feel it in my blood! Most Portuguese people are crazy about football too! My dad always goes shopping when a football game is on. He says it’s great because there are no queues and the shopping centre is nearly empty!

     I usually play football at school or in my garden, but when I play in the garden, my grandma always complains, saying that we break her plants and flowers – actually, she goes mad, but then we blame my little brother and then she doesn’t tell him off! Can you believe it? Grandmas!

      My favourite team in the whole wide world is the Portuguese team Benfica. I went to see them play this summer. It was my first game of the season and my first live game. It was fantastic!!! My dad took me. It was his first live game as well. Benfica were playing against Porto. My Pupoh (that means dad’s sister) Monica and Uncle Ricardo also came with us. We had a little problem though. Uncle Ricardo is a Porto fan and our tickets were for the Benfica area. It was really funny, because when Porto scored or nearly scored, he lifted his arms to start cheering and my Pupoh had to grab him to stop him (then he had to pretend he was cursing! It was so funny), otherwise he would have been beaten up by the Benfica fans that were surrounding us!!! I went to support Benfica of course!

     The game was really interesting. Right at the beginning, the fans were throwing fire torches on to the field and many of the fans were swearing too much and my father decided, he was never going to go to another game again. He took me to the game to show me how much he loves me (he hates football), so did Pupoh! Dad said, next time I have to choose something else for him to do, for him to prove his love for me. I LOVE YOU ABU. YOU’RE THE BEST (Abu means dad, by the way).

     Oh, the best bit was when this man dressed as a devil ran onto the pitch and started to choke the referee! It was unbelievable! The next day, photos of the devil strangling the referee were in all the papers. I was so excited! I loved the game.

     At the end of the game, the Benfica fans had to leave the stadium first (that was us), so we went to a café, so that we could stay away from any trouble. My dad was really worried about me. There was a lot of fighting when the Porto fans finally came out.

     My favourite players are Cristiano Ronaldo, Scholes and Roberto Carlos.

     I love football, but I don’t like the violence or all the swearing, I don’t think there is any need for it.
